Conference Announcement — University of Grenoble, December 10–11
The University of Grenoble will host a two-day international conference on December 10–11 exploring the digital transformation of the European Union’s Area of Freedom, Security, and Justice (AFSJ). Over the past decade, the EU has developed a wide range of digital instruments—from EUROSUR and e-Evidence to e-CODEX, ECRIS, Prüm II, and the increasing use of AI within agencies such as Frontex, Europol, Eurojust, and eu-LISA—reshaping both security governance and free movement across Europe. This shift has contributed to the emergence of a new form of European digital territoriality, while raising crucial questions of privacy, fundamental rights, accountability, and access to justice.
The conference will examine these legal and institutional tensions, focusing on how to design a digital AFSJ that safeguards fundamental rights, ensures transparency and effective judicial protection, and avoids the risks of excessive surveillance and algorithmic opacity, while enabling more efficient transnational cooperation and digital procedures.
The event will take place in hybrid format, allowing both in-person and remote participation.
